About Jonathan Becker
Pressure yields growth.
I grew up in Vancouver, BC. I love art and business, but until I discovered internet marketing, I never knew how to combine the two. Before I began my career in SEO I received a degree from The University of Victoria in Political Science, spent two years at a boutique commercial real estate agency as a commercial leasing agent (my de facto business degree), started an online gaming portal (my first truly successful business), and received a diploma in web development and new media design from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
When I became interested in Internet marketing (in 2007), I knew almost right away that I'd stumbled into something amazing. And while my first online business was successful, I always felt frustrated that there was a barrier between my level of technical knowledge and the kinds of things I wanted to be capable of doing with websites.
Studying at BCIT changed all that by giving me a level of technical sophistication that I simply did not possess prior to my training there. It was a tough decision to close a business and go back to school, but looking back I now see it as having been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Learning the languages of the web (HTML, CSS, XML, XHTML) allowed me to explore areas of Internet marketing beyond just social media; most notably search engine optimization.
